Welcome to the Crown and Garter, a traditional friendly destination 17th Century pub / Inn with restaurant and separate bed and breakfast en-suite accommodation, family owned and personally run near to Newbury, Newbury Racecourse and Hungerford.
We are a quiet alternative to a hotel for business visitors, the pub / inn is about 10 - 15 minutes from M4 junctions 13/14 set in stunning countryside and yet also conveniently situated for Heathrow Airport, London, Oxford, Windsor and Bath
A perfect venue for a relaxed drink / evening meal, a weekend break exploring the beautiful Berkshire countryside or an even longer stay
Bar Area
The Inns ancient and unique charm can best be glimpsed in the bar area, the oldest part boasts a hugh inglenook fireplace and wooden beams. The bar has a fine selection of local and guest real ales, malt whiskies and good wines as well as free broadband access
Restaurant Area
The Crown and Garter offers a delicious interesting variety of dishes all freshly prepared on the premises by our partner chef using mainly local produce and can be enjoyed in either the cosy wood pannelled restaurant and bar areas or outside on our new patio or in our enclosed beer garden under ancient English oak
We offer a full a la carte menu, also traditional roasts on Sundays (booking recommended) and lighter bites such as home baked baguettes and ploughmans
Bedroom Accommodation
Eight purpose built bedrooms surround a private very pretty cottage garden complete with pond. All the bedrooms are non smoking, very spacious with comfortable beds and tastefully decorated. The rooms are all en-suite with power showers and well equipped with flat screen TV, freeview and radio, tea and coffee making facilities and hairdryers
For leisure visitors the inn is surrounded by beautiful countryside in which one can walk, cycle, ride, fish, shoot, play golf or just quietly relax
History
In Days gone by the Inn is reputed to have been a resting place for James 11 on his way to visit one of his mistresses. The inns barn was also used to lay out the bodies of George Broomham and Dorthy Newman who were convicted of murder and hung at Combe Gibbet
